Windsurf's current self-serve usage system combines daily and weekly token-based quota. The selected model and amount of context determine how quickly those pools are consumed, so one prompt does not always equal one unit of usage.

How to Check Windsurf Usage

Open Windsurf Settings → Plan Info or the authenticated plan page. Review both the daily and weekly values, their reset timing, and whether extra usage is enabled. A healthy daily balance does not help if the weekly pool is exhausted.

Daily Quota vs Weekly Quota

The daily pool controls short-term pace; the weekly pool controls sustained usage. Frequent heavy days can exhaust the weekly window even after a daily refresh. Conversely, a bursty day can hit the daily pool while weekly capacity remains.

What Does “Overall Message Rate Limit” Mean?

A message or provider-capacity error does not always mean the personal quota is empty. First inspect Plan Info. If both usage windows have capacity, wait briefly and retry, test another available model, and check Windsurf's service status. If a quota is empty, wait for its reset or use an eligible extra-usage option.

How Extra Usage Works

On eligible paid plans, extra usage is metered after included quota. Treat it as a budgeted overage, not an automatic extension of the subscription. Confirm the rate, payment method, and any spending control before allowing a long Cascade run to continue unattended.

• Use free or lower-cost models for routine work when they are suitable.
• Trim irrelevant repository context before a long Cascade task.
• Break open-ended agents into smaller tasks with stopping conditions.
